Promoting academic excellence in the periphery

Nachshon is our online mentoring program aimed at opening the gates of higher education for students from Israel's social and geographic periphery.

Children with academic promise who live on the social and economic periphery in Israel often fail at school because of the lack of support and assistance, coupled with a dearth of successful and inspiring role models to emulate. Many have difficulty in passing the matriculation examinations in mathematics and physics, let alone excel in these subjects, consequently losing the opportunity to get accepted into prestigious university faculties and break out of their social cycle.

The Nachshon program, developed by CET, is designed to respond to these challenges. The program is aimed at students in Grades 8 through 12, and it leads them to excellence in mathematics using a unique, innovative model of online tutoring. Our goal is to increase the number of students entering for higher level examinations in mathematics (4 and 5 units) and physics (5 units) and by this to open the gates of higher education in prestigious fields to all students;

Nacshon is an innovative online mentoring program, which gives each student a tutor, who works with him during the school year. The tutors are students from prestigious faculties at the various universities, who undergo specialized training. Each tutor provides support for a homogeneous group of 2-4 students (4 being the maximum) at the same time. Sessions are held at least twice a week, at set times, after school hours.
The lesson plans and sophisticated learning material (such as interactive simulations and presentations) are developed at CET by first-class professionals, specially adapted to the content and teaching methods used in the classroom.

Nachshon has proven itself over recent years: of all the students taking part in the project for at least one year (over 2,000 students so far), 74% obtained their matriculation certificate, with over two-thirds of them obtaining a grade of 80 or above.
In 2008 Nachshon was selected to participate in the Facing Tomorrow conference hosted by  President Shimon Peres.

The cost of supporting one student for one year in one subject is $ 500.
